Tourists often confuse Merang with Marang which is a village in the South of Terengganu. Marang village is situated in the Setiu district of Terengganu, and is popular for transporting the tourists to popular islands like Redang and Bidong. Tourists love these two islands for their water sport which includes Snorkeling and water diving. There is an Observatory in the Merang Township, which is the most modern construction in the village- a place which is no more than a sleeping fishing community. The purpose of this white observatory is to sight the moon, which usually is spotted before Hari Raya Haji and Hari raja Puasa.
Nonetheless, the scenic beauty of the place with all the scattered coconut trees and the beautiful deep blue sea makes this village alone a great tourist destination. Just below the hill in the village is Merang jetty, which is a place with boats that transport the tourists to nearby islands and is also equipped with eateries and rest rooms apart from the ticket counters.
